Celestia

Free movement in the infinite gives people a relativistic vision on daily live. Unpredictable space arises from an unsuspected spaceship. We adjusted the free software Celestia to project the windows of a spaceship. In Amsterdam we successfully transformed the Melkweg into the spaceship Celestia during the Timemachine festival. The touristic cruse trough the universe started in a squat. The ship was a surrounding inspired by John Carpenter, Galaxy Quest, en de Hichhiker`s guide trough the galaxy. On board there was a smart bar, an extraterrestrial museum, the captain's bridge, and an airlock. We landed on planets and met local aliens outside the airlock. Pirate actions, crash landings and drunk captains are a risks of space travel. A multi-dimensional mirror teleport system gave the audience the opportunity to flee at any moment. We plan to build an interactive installation out of the performance: In an empty studio stands a big chair with joystick and touchscreen. Visitors enter trough a electrical door. When somebody sits on the chair the installation is activated. The lights dim, the door closes and the projected windows become visible. The person in the chair becomes the captain of a spaceship that talks. What happens is decided by the captain by a multiple choice of possibilities.
